GRP solutions for renewable energy infrastructure

SGI Composites manufactures GRP enclosures, access systems and containment products for the infrastructure supporting renewable energy. We help project teams protect equipment, provide practical maintenance access and manage liquid-storage risks across generation, grid-connection and associated operational sites.

From a cabinet at a remote installation to an access route around plant, the specification needs to reflect the location and the work people will carry out there. Tell us about your equipment, site and programme. We will help develop the composite elements around those requirements.

Support for the infrastructure around energy generation

Renewable-energy developments bring together electrical, civil and mechanical packages. The interfaces between them deserve attention: a cabinet door needs space to open, a service trench needs a suitable cover and a maintenance route needs to remain usable once the equipment is installed.

SGI supports developers, engineering and construction contractors, equipment suppliers and asset operators with composite manufacture. We work from the project brief to identify the dimensions, environmental exposure and access requirements that affect the products we supply.

Applications to discuss with our team include:

  • Equipment housings and maintenance access for solar and wind project infrastructure.
  • Cabinets and covers associated with grid connections and distribution equipment.
  • Ancillary enclosures and access requirements on battery energy storage sites.
  • Process-area access and liquid containment at biogas and other energy facilities, subject to the specified conditions.

GRP enclosures for equipment and utility infrastructure

Bespoke cabinets around the approved electrical design
Bespoke cabinets around the approved electrical design

Our GRP HV/LV cabinets and DNO enclosures are developed around the equipment layout and the relevant operator or asset-owner specification. SGI supplies the enclosure; electrical design and equipment responsibilities remain with the appointed specialists. Any DNO or IDNO acceptance is project-specific.

For smaller control and monitoring installations, explore our GRP service cabinets. Defining the equipment and maintenance task early helps establish the right access arrangement.

Modular housings for larger equipment packages
Modular housings for larger equipment packages

Our GRP modular enclosures offer flexibility where the layout needs several compartments, larger access openings or provision for future changes. Options can include insulation, ventilation and security features, according to the agreed design.

A modular approach is worth discussing where similar housings are needed across several locations. Agreeing a repeatable configuration can make the purchasing brief clearer while still allowing site-specific differences to be identified.

Specify for the location
Specify for the location

Outdoor equipment protection involves more than choosing an enclosure size. Coastal exposure, wind-driven rain, access restrictions and equipment heat output can all influence the brief.

Give the enclosure design enough attention before civil details are fixed. The base, cable routes and position of neighbouring equipment need to work with the housing, particularly where maintenance or future equipment replacement will require a clear opening.

Maintenance access that works with the installed plant

Walkways, crossings and access platforms
Walkways, crossings and access platforms

Our GRP walkways create defined routes to equipment, and bespoke access platforms can provide crossings over services or access at a working level. Layouts should reflect inspection points, routine servicing and the movement of tools or replacement parts.

For an exposed site, drainage and underfoot conditions need to be considered alongside the route itself. Share the intended maintenance activities and the surrounding layout so we can discuss the appropriate configuration.

Trench covers and grating
Trench covers and grating

Our GRP trench covers can be specified for utility ducts and channels, with the cover and support design matched to the required duty. Identify pedestrian routes, equipment movements and any vehicle loading in the brief.

Safe Tread open mesh GRP grating is available for suitable supported access surfaces. Where an existing solid route needs improved grip, non-slip floor sheets can provide a retrofit option. Product selection should take account of the base, fixings and transitions into adjoining surfaces.

Containment around oils, chemicals and maintenance equipment

Renewable-energy sites can still involve stored oils, process chemicals and maintenance liquids. Containment should be selected around the actual inventory and the way containers or equipment are used.

Safe Spill is SGI Composites’ spill-containment range. It includes:

For fixed containment structures, our GRP bund lining service can provide a protective lining around the specified exposure. Chemical compatibility, containment capacity and the condition of the structure need to be assessed together.

Why consider composites for exposed infrastructure?

GRP is a fibre-reinforced polymer made using glass fibres and resin. It offers design flexibility and does not suffer from rust in the way ferrous metal does. This can be valuable for equipment housings, covers and access components exposed to weather or corrosive conditions.

The choice still needs to be made at product level. Loads, temperature, fire performance, chemical contact and expected wear determine what is suitable. We use the project requirements to inform the component, rather than treating every composite product as interchangeable.

Long service life and reduced replacement needs are useful considerations when assessing materials. You can also read about SGI’s sustainability commitments and manufacturing initiatives. Project-specific environmental comparisons should be based on the products and evidence relevant to that project.

Manufacturing experience relevant to energy projects

A plant room designed around the equipment
A plant room designed around the equipment

SGI manufactured a bespoke containerised plant room for Tesco, incorporating ventilation, double-door access and slip-resistant grating flooring. The completed unit measured approximately 8 × 3 × 3 metres.

This was a retail infrastructure project. It demonstrates the equipment-led design and manufacturing capability that can also inform an enquiry for an energy-site housing.

Access infrastructure in corrosive working conditions

At Ringway’s washdown facilities, SGI replaced deteriorated steel platforms with GRP access infrastructure. The published project covers 45 linear metres across four live washdown stations, where wet conditions and salt exposure were central to the brief.

The project provides a useful example of material selection and installation planning where operational access must be maintained.
