Filament Wound GRP Pipes
Bespoke high-pressure pipework engineered for corrosive and demanding environments
High-pressure pipework in chemical, water and industrial plants demands more than standard materials can reliably deliver. Corrosion, weight and ongoing maintenance costs put steel systems under constant pressure — and eventually bring them to failure.
SGI Composites designs and manufactures filament wound GRP (Glass Reinforced Polymer) and FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) pipes as a robust, long-lasting alternative. Built to your exact pressure rating, diameter, resin system and fittings, with GRP flanges, nozzles and specials integrated at manufacture, not retrofitted on site.
High-Pressure Pipework That Performs Where It Matters Most
SGI Composites filament wound GRP pipes deliver structural integrity, chemical resistance and a significantly lower installed weight, making them the preferred choice for demanding service conditions including:
- Wastewater and effluent systems
- Seawater and marine process pipelines
- Chemical dosing and transfer duties
- Water treatment and desalination plant
- Power generation and cooling water circuits
- Industrial process and manufacturing pipework
Where steel corrodes and plastic alternatives lack the pressure performance, filament wound GRP provides an engineered composite solution with an extended service life and minimal maintenance overhead.
Manufactured to Your Exact Specification
Every high-pressure line is different. That is why our pipework is designed and built around your project requirements — not adapted from standard off-the-shelf profiles.
SGI Composites GRP pipes and FRP pipework can be specified and supplied with:
- Custom pressure ratings and wall thickness, calculated to your operating conditions
- Bespoke diameters from small bore to large diameter runs
- A choice of resin systems to match your process media — vinylester, isophthalic polyester, epoxy and more
- GRP flanges, nozzles and specials integrated during manufacture
- Fittings and transitions designed to interface with existing infrastructure
- Pipe supports, anchors and saddles in GRP where required
By integrating GRP flanges, reducers and take-offs at the manufacturing stage, we eliminate site-fitted modifications that introduce weak points and extend installation time. You receive a complete, pre-engineered composite piping system ready for connection.
The Manufacturing Process Behind Our GRP Pipes
Filament winding is the most precise method of manufacturing high-performance composite pipe. Continuous glass fibre rovings are wound under controlled tension around a mandrel at engineered angles. The winding pattern, angle and tension are all controlled throughout the process, producing a pipe wall with exactly the structural properties required for the intended service conditions.
The principal advantage of filament winding over other composite manufacturing methods is the consistency it delivers at every point along the pipe length. Because the fibre placement is machine-controlled rather than applied by hand, wall thickness, fibre volume fraction and laminate architecture remain uniform from end to end. This matters significantly in pressurised pipe applications, where variation in wall construction can become a point of failure.
By adjusting the winding angle, our engineers can tune the balance between hoop strength — resistance to internal pressure — and axial strength, which governs how the pipe handles end loads, bending and thermal expansion.
Key advantages of filament winding for pipe manufacture:
- Precise control of fibre angle and resin content throughout the pipe wall
- Consistent, uniform wall thickness over the full length
- High hoop and axial strength optimised for internal pressure
- Ability to tailor laminate design for specific pressure classes and fluid types
- Smooth internal bore to maintain flow rates and resist fouling
Our filament winding capability allows us to produce pipes for operating pressures well in excess of those achievable with hand lay-up or spray-up processes, making them the correct choice for demanding high-pressure applications.

GRP and FRP Filament Wound Pipes Guide
Corrosion, leaks and unplanned downtime should not be accepted as inevitable features of industrial pipework. GRP and FRP composite pipes eliminate the root cause rather than managing the symptoms.
SGI Composites GRP pipes offer measurable advantages across five key areas:
- Corrosion resistance: GRP is inherently non-corrosive. No internal or external protective coating is required, and there is no degradation through rust or chemical attack in normal operating conditions.
- Weight: Filament wound GRP pipes are significantly lighter than steel equivalents — typically around one quarter of the weight. This reduces lifting requirements, support structure loading and overall installation cost.
- Service life: Properly specified GRP pipework in compatible service conditions offers a design life measured in decades, with no requirement for periodic internal lining or external coating maintenance.
- Maintenance cost: The absence of corrosion and the durability of composite materials translate directly into reduced inspection frequency, fewer reactive repairs and lower whole-life cost compared to steel.
- Installation: Lower weight means faster handling, reduced crane requirements and safer working conditions for installation teams.
We can also inspect and refurbish existing tanks or provide replacements — extending their lifespan and improving compliance.
