Sectional Tank Repair

SGI Composites was appointed to refurbish a sectional tank for James M Brown that had fallen into a poor state of repair, with multiple leaks caused by corrosion. Rather than replacing the tank, our team recommended a complete fibreglass (FRP) repair and lining system, delivering a cost-effective alternative that restored the tank’s integrity. The solution provided a seamless, watertight, and corrosion-resistant finish, ensuring the tank is now safe, secure, and fit for long-term use.

Survey & Solution Recommendation

SGI Composites was engaged by James M Brown Ltd, the world’s largest manufacturer of cadmium pigments, to address issues with an ageing storage tank that had suffered from corrosion and begun to leak. Seeking a cost-effective alternative to full replacement, the client required a reliable repair solution that would also allow the tank to be repurposed for a new use.

Following a free on-site tank survey, SGI Composites recommended a complete repair and fibreglass (FRP) lining system. This approach provided a practical, economical solution to restore the tank’s integrity while extending its service life, which the client was pleased to proceed with.

Challenging Conditions & Installation Process

While tank refurbishments of this nature are typically completed within a week, this project coincided with a period of sub-zero temperatures. The situation was further complicated by the tank’s elevated position on stilts, exposing it to even harsher conditions. Despite these challenges, the SGI Composites team successfully completed the full refurbishment in just nine days.

The process began with grit blasting the tank interior to remove corrosion and expose any structural weaknesses. A protective tarpaulin was installed externally to minimise water ingress, allowing work to continue efficiently. All holes and compromised areas were then carefully sealed, with weakened sections reinforced using fibreglass (FRP). Finally, a seamless, watertight FRP lining was applied throughout the tank, restoring it for long-term, reliable use.

Completed Tank Refurbishment

The tank repair and fibreglass (FRP) lining have been successfully completed across all walls, floors, and structural struts. The result is a fully sealed, corrosion-resistant, and durable containment system, restoring the tank’s integrity and ensuring reliable, long-term performance.
