SGI Composites delivered specialist GRP lining solutions for both new and existing sulphuric acid storage tank bunds on behalf of Ameycespa (East) Ltd, a leading provider of waste management and recycling services across multiple sectors. The project required a highly durable and chemically resistant lining system capable of safely containing aggressive substances within a demanding industrial environment.

Project Background & Condition
Ameycespa operated two internal chemical tank bunds used for storing sulphuric acid, along with a scrubber tank where chemicals were mixed. After two years of operation, the concrete bund floor within the chemical storage area had begun to deteriorate due to exposure to aggressive substances, compromising its integrity and containment performance.

New Bunds & Tight Programme
In addition to the internal repairs, Ameycespa had two newly constructed external bunds that required fibreglass lining prior to the installation of incoming tanks. With tanks scheduled to arrive from Spain, the project was time-critical, requiring a fast and efficient solution to ensure the bunds were fully prepared and ready for use.

Solution – Chemical-Resistant Bund Lining
SGI Composites implemented a comprehensive repair and lining solution for the chemical tank bunds, beginning with grit blasting to remove debris and prepare the surfaces. Minor repairs were carried out where required before applying a high-performance vinyl ester resin system using a four-coat application. This specialist system provides protection against sulphuric acid concentrations of up to 76%, ensuring a safe, durable, and environmentally responsible solution.
To meet the tight programme for the new external bunds, a protective enclosure was installed, allowing work to continue in all weather conditions. This enabled the team to complete the project on time, applying a chemical-resistant fibreglass (GRP) lining to both new concrete bunds and ensuring they were ready for incoming tank installations.
